Lara waited up for Curtis, but he didn’t co ho even after the day grew dark and the night grew darker.
She had no specific reason for waiting up, perhaps except to ask him why he kissed her with such hunger.
But he didn’t appear. And she eventually went up into her room to sleep.
When the rays of the sun pierced through her room’s curtains, Lara yawned and sat up.
She rubbed her eyes open, feeling slightly refreshed from sleep. Lara was about to go downstairs for a cup of water when her eyes fell on a figure sitting on the single chair in her room.
Curtis.
His expression was unreadable, and Lara wondered how long he had been in her room, watching her sleep.
Before she could stop herself and think about what she was about to say, the words flowed out of her mouth.
"You do know that breaking into soone else’s room and watching them while they slept is a creepy thing to do, right?"
Curtis raised a single eyebrow at her words.
"This is my house. I own every room in here, and I own whoever is in any of those rooms. You, in addition, are carrying my children in your belly. I have to keep a close eye on you at all tis. I want to be closer to my kids, so judge my actions all you want, but I don’t care."
His words were delivered so blandly that Lara rolled her eyes at him.
"Oh co on, stop exaggerating. You have like a hundred bodyguards in the house. Do you think I have any chance of running away from them?"
Curtis leaned forward, and his face beca even more visible to Lara. When she saw the emotions in his eyes though, she froze.
There was a mixture of emotions in Curtis’ eyes. And while the others were too masked for her to recognise them, there was an emotion that stood out to Lara.
Desire.
It smoldered in his eyes as he stared at her, and Lara’s heart skipped a beat.
There was unabashed desire and lust in Curtis’ eyes as he stared at her, and Lara moved back away from him.
"What?" he asked, suddenly aware of her reaction.
"You scared of now?" he went on.
Lara swallowed and shook her head.
"No. No. It’s just...why did you kiss yesterday? Why did you kiss like that?" she asked instead.
And Curtis’s face shuttered.
He stood up and placed his hands in his pockets.
"Like what, Lara?" he asked, his voice suddenly taking on a bland monotone.
"Like you wanted . Like you wanted more than a kiss. It was so... intense," she responded. Curtis’ eyes seed to be blazing now, but Lara refused to look away even though her heart was pounding violently against her chest.
She needed to know if Curtis was at the risk of going back on his words. If he was going to break the terms of their contract by wanting to sleep with her.
Curtis took a step closer, leaning down until he was staring directly into her face. Lara’s entire body was hot now, and she desperately wanted to put so space between them.
But she could not move. Her body seed to have left her control.
Her limbs were frozen, and all she could do was breathe.
Staring at him up close, his gorgeous face was all she could see.
"What do you think, Lara? Why do you think I kissed you like that?" he whispered, throwing her own question back to her.
She shook her head.
"I...I don’t know."
Curtis held her gaze for what felt like forever but in reality, was just a few monts.
Then he sighed and stood up.
"Forget about the kiss, Lara. It doesn’t an anything. Get dressed and co downstairs as soon as you can. There is sothing important we need to talk about," he stated and walked out without giving her as much as a backwards glance.
Lara heaved a deep breath that she didn’t know she was holding.
What was that all about, she thought?
It was too intense, and it shook her more than she liked.
Whatever it was that was going on with Curtis, he clearly was not willing to talk about it.
And from his reaction today, Lara wasn’t sure she wanted to know what it was about either.
She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself. Curtis might be handso, but he was a handso devil.
Lara held it in her mind not to ever forget that. Once she had the babies, they would co to a conclusion on how to take care of them, and she would stay forever away from him.
With that resolution in mind, Lara stood up and made her way to the bathroom. She had a hot bath which helped to calm her nerves.
Then she got dressed, while actively trying not to think about what he could possibly want to talk to her about again, after the discussion they just had.
Lara made her way downstairs where she found Curtis waiting for her on the couch.
She sat down opposite him and waited for him to speak.
"How do you feel?" he asked, and his voice was surprisingly calm.
"Better, thank you."
He nodded. "That’s good. As long as you’re okay, that’s all I need to know. I am going to be busy for a while, but if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call ," he ordered.
"Yeah. Sure"
Curtis nodded and stood up, and apparently, they had co to the end of the discussion. He was about to leave the living room when sothing occurred to Lara.
"Wait," she called out to him. He turned back to face her.
"I can resu back at work now, yes? I don’t want to stay at ho. I would be bored to death," she noted.
Curtis’s brows furrowed into a slight frown.
"Are you sure about that?" he asked.
She stood up and nodded.
"Yeah. I don’t mind, really. I think going to work and having sothing to do will make more happy," she explained.
"Okay. Do you want to fire your ex husband and his girlfriend?" he asked, and from the tone of his voice, he ant every single word he just said.
Lara laughed softly.
She shook her head.
"No, no. You don’t have to do that. I can deal with them myself."
"You sure?" he insisted.
Lara’s smile grew wider.
"Of course I am. I will take care of those betrayers, Curtis. I have a plan."
