Finally, Shen Jing received a set of photos from the nanny. Her cat, Sister, had returned ho safely and, after a bath, was once again a clean and pretty little kitty.

The nanny ssaged, "Sister was bullied by so stray cats, but luckily, Zhuang Ming caught them and took them to a rescue center to stand up for her."

Shen Jing typed, "Is she hurt?"

"There are so scratches on her front paw," the nanny replied. "The vet has seen it; it’s not serious."

Shen Jing put her phone away and went to bed.

Old Master Shen had arranged a minor position for her at the financial branch of the Shen Family’s corporation. However, on her very first day, she was late. Furthermore, when the Old Master called her to co ho for dinner, she left work early. She never clocked in on ti. The general manager knew her identity and didn’t dare to reprimand her much. She was, however, sharp. Her analysis of trading issues was incisive, as if she had been apprenticed to a great master.

She would always sit in the quietest corner of the eting room and softly begin, "Predicting prices might be less effective than starting with volatility. The blue-chip stock on January 20th was priced at 2.9056. The at-the-money option volatility was 13.63%, which is close to the options’ standard deviation of 1.54% over the past year—a low difference. Assuming price fluctuations aren’t a concern, Manager, why not ask the board to buy a straddle combination?"

Soone once remarked, "Miss Four really doesn’t seem like soone who only knows how to play the pipa."

All she would say was, "The general manager is a good teacher."

The manager only rembered telling her to eat lunch, that she could sneak off early, and that being half an hour late was fine. After all, she was often late, unfamiliar with the roads in Beijing, and fond of routes prone to peak traffic, aning she was stuck in jams every day. Who would dare argue with Miss Four of the Shen Family?

She appeared guileless and unworldly. Though fully aware that the route would be congested during the morning rush hour, she would invariably take it again the next day.

The manager really wanted to ask, "You could take a detour, you know."

Shen Jing smiled, deftly shifting the bla. "You should ask the GPS; it’s the one that takes this way every day."

So she’s just bad with directions, the manager realized.

Shen Jing took off her work badge. "I’m leaving work early today, and I want to rest tomorrow. Is it okay if I don’t co in?"

The manager turned his head, his face crinkling. "Go, go ahead."

This manager was also a Shen, a collateral relative.

"Goodbye, Ninth Uncle Shen," Shen Jing said.

The Shen Family’s cooperation with the Xie Family made it inevitable that she would have to interact with mbers of the Xie Family, and the responsibility of socializing fell to her.

As she t Xie Qinyang more often, Old Master Shen began to feel sothing was amiss. "Although the young master of the Xie Family is known to be playful, no girl has gotten close to him in all these years. Do you know him?"

"Sort of," Shen Jing replied.

"You should keep your distance from the scions of powerful families in the future to avoid gossip," the Old Master advised. "In terms of relations, your elder sister’s brother-in-law is also your brother-in-law."

She didn’t know why that particular sentence struck such a nerve, causing her eyes to redden as she bowed her head and shoveled rice into her mouth.

Old Master Shen hesitated, wanting to say more but stopping himself.

The words "younger uncle" made her think of Zhou Luchen: his mischievous, wild ways in the night, his kisses landing on the side of her neck, forcing her to call him ’Younger Uncle’ over and over again.

He was like a potent poison; one touch, and the addiction was strong enough to make you feel like you’d lost half your life. No matter how busy she was with work, she still couldn’t forget him.

"Is sothing on your mind?" Old Master Shen had noticed she was always restless, trying to bury herself in work as if to cover sothing up.

Shen Jing picked up so food with her chopsticks. "No, just eating."

"And what about the Zhou Family?" the Old Master pressed.

Shen Jing feigned ignorance. "What Zhou Family? Which Zhou Family are you talking about?"

Old Master Shen scrutinized her face for any flicker of emotion, then snorted. "In that hutong district, near the Imperial City Root, what other Zhou Family could there be? Who under the Imperial City Root doesn’t know the Zhou Family?"

He continued his inquiry, "Why was it the Zhou Family’s driver who took you to your company yesterday?"

Shen Jing placed so food on the Old Master’s plate, saying calmly, "I got lost, and their driver kindly showed the way."

Kindly? The term ’kind-hearted’ simply didn’t apply to the Zhou Family.
