As he spoke, he started walking toward the maid Irina.
But the gentle maid simply smiled and raised one hand, waving it lightly in front of herself.
Her left hand, which had been clasped over her lower abdon, elegantly lifted. Wearing white lace gloves, she turned her wrist, palm facing outward, as if rely pushing open an invisible screen door.
Whoosh...
A semi-translucent ring expanded between the maid Irina and Grill.
A hollow ring, no larger than Grill's fist.
It was a ring with a slight thickness, possessing two sides. The side facing Irina was white, while the side facing Grill was black.
This ring was hollow. Within the border of black and white, there were no special effects, and it didn't obstruct the view. It looked empty, as if there was nothing there.
The ring rotated slowly clockwise, expanding gradually.
Soon, its edge touched a nearby shelf, but it caused no disturbance whatsoever.
No sound, no cutting, no explosion...
The ring continued to grow, sinking into the floor, the shelves, the ceiling, and the walls. Eventually, it was obscured by these objects and disappeared from sight.
A few seconds later, the ring-shaped portion had fully rged into the surrounding environnt, vanishing completely from the visible field of view.
The space between Grill and Irina beca empty again, appearing as if nothing had happened.
But Grill's forward steps had stopped.
He halted right in front of the now-invisible ring.
"You don't need to be so wary of , miss," Grill said, looking at Irina. "We've only just t today. There's no irreconcilable conflict between us."
He spread his left hand in a helpless gesture, then raised it, reaching toward the seemingly empty area before him. But he stopped mid-air and withdrew.
This was an extraordinary ability he didn't understand. He dared not approach recklessly.
He closed his eyes.
"Suddenly ending up in this damn place, hearing about things from a hundred years ago, using currency from a hundred years ago..."
"Our top priority is to leave here."
He refocused his gaze on Irina:
"That notice board is trying to divide us, hoping we'll tear each other apart for that empty promise."
"I don't think we can't cooperate."
"I'm an outsider. You're an outsider too. We both know that very well."
On Irina's face, that gentle smile remained unchanged. The hand she had raised was now lightly placed over her chest.
"But, Sheriff, you're pointing a gun at ," the maid Irina replied, her tone still gentle.
"Heh, I'm not—" Grill opened his mouth, instinctively starting to speak. Then he suddenly rembered he wasn't in the mob anymore and forced himself to shut up.
He took a deep breath, his chest heaving a few tis. After thinking for a mont, he slowly pulled his right hand out of his pocket, revealing his empty palm.
"Alright," he said, fully exposing that rough hand to Irina. "Now we can talk."
His gaze subconsciously swept over Irina's overly delicate, seductive maid outfit once more, but he quickly steadied himself:
"My intuition tells
you don't seem to be soone's personal maid."
Irina nodded gently.
"As you've guessed, we take commissions rather than serving a single person."
Grill smiled.
"In that case, I'd like to commission you to cooperate with , to act as a temporary consultant."
But Irina rely bowed slightly, elegantly curtsying to Grill. Her already slightly short black-and-white maid dress lifted a little more.
Her tone carried a hint of regret: "I'm terribly sorry, Sheriff."
"It's an honor to receive your favor."
"But for each mission, we serve only one master."
She lifted her head, her gaze eting Grill's gently.
"Once this mission is over, if you still wish to na , Irina would be very happy to serve you."
"But for now..." Her gaze dropped slightly, as if expressing an apology, though her posture remained motionless. "Please allow
to refuse."
Grill lowered his empty right hand, his tone puzzled. "Why do you insist on acting alone?"
"Even if you only serve one master at a ti, cooperating with
would allow us to complete your work faster and more efficiently, wouldn't it?"
He raised the question, confused.
"Completing work as efficiently as possible should also be a maid's duty."
Irina didn't retort him.
"What you say makes a lot of sense, but please allow
to refuse once more."
Grill clicked his tongue. "Why are you so stubborn?"
He exhaled forcefully, no longer trying to persuade her. Instead, he turned to look at the fitting room not far away.
"And you, the one hiding in that fitting room over there."
"What I just said was ant for you too."
"If you're interested in cooperating, co out and talk."
The hat shop fell silent for a few seconds. With a creak, the wooden door of the fitting room was pushed open.
Falson, now wearing a slightly newer set of clothes, stepped out from behind the door with an awkward expression on his face.
He'd been caught eavesdropping.
He hadn't moved a muscle just now.
The Savage?
Falson recalled the information Grill had just ntioned.
Was it a Law Mark that enhanced intuition?
He looked at the badge with a police insignia hanging on Grill's chest, scratched his hair, and was montarily unsure what to do.
He really couldn't decide whether to cooperate with this man.
After all, he didn't know what Samuel thought, nor could he gauge the strength of either party.
He'd co out simply because he'd been discovered anyway, so hiding or not made no difference.
But if he absolutely had to choose between the two for cooperation, he'd still prefer Samuel, soone he'd already gotten sowhat familiar with and who had led him onto the path of becoming a Law Seeker.
"Forget it. You can discuss it with your companion," Grill said, his eyes drooping, looking sowhat listless.
"But the opportunity won't wait forever. My patience has its limits."
Why is this guy talking to himself...
Just as this thought crossed Falson's mind, Grill suddenly smacked his lips.
"Whatever. You probably think I'm bluffing, that I look like an idiot."
This response made the expression on Falson's face stiffen slightly.
"I'll co here again tomorrow. If any of you is willing to cooperate with , I'll protect you. But if not, then forget it." With that, he turned and left the hat shop.
