(...continued)

But all of a sudden, out of the blue, Kieran stirred.

It began small.

A tremor beneath Selene’s palm.

Then...

His heartbeat spiked.

Hard.

Violent.

Thud

Thud

Thud

It slamd against her hand like sothing trying to break through bone.

Selene’s eyes sharpened.

"No," she murmured softly.

His fingers moved.

Slow at first.

Then suddenly...They closed around her wrist.

Tight.

Not conscious.

Not deliberate.

But powerful.

The Alpha was still there.

Even buried beneath sedation.

His wolf rose like a tide under ice.

His breathing hitched sharply, chest arching upward as if dragging against invisible restraints. The magic Selene had so carefully woven trembled, flickering around him like thin glass under pressure.

"Kieran," she said, voice low but edged now. "Easy."

His head turned slightly on the dirt. Jaw tightening.

A growl vibrated faintly in his throat.

Weak.

But real.

Then ca his prayer...

"...Autumn."

Again... "Autumn!"

The na left him stronger this ti.

Clearer.

Not a fading whisper anymore.

A call.

Selene went very still.

Her wrist remained trapped in his grip, pulse steady beneath his tightening fingers. She felt the resistance spreading through him...muscles reactivating, heart demanding more blood, more strength, more will.

Her sedation began to fracture.

"You are not ready," she said quietly.

His heartbeat surged again in defiance.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

Each beat brighter. Wilder.

His wolf was clawing upward through the fog she had wrapped around him.

Selene’s other hand pressed harder against his chest.

The magic deepened.

Darkened.

"You are going to tear yourself apart," she warned softly.

His grip tightened painfully.

She leaned closer, her voice lowering into sothing colder.

"Don’t make force you."

The air shifted when she said it.

Sothing far more sinister stirred in the space between them.

Kieran’s body jerked once...muscles straining...then his head tilted towards her slightly as if sensing the threat beneath her tone.

Selene exhaled slowly.

"This is pointless," she murmured to herself. "You won’t listen to logic, will you?" It wasn’t anger. It was malice.

The temporary suspension was no longer enough for Selene. It wasn’t working. She didn’t like him fighting, resisting her want, her need, her greed...

But his wolf would continue fighting.

His heart would continue calling.

And every ti he whispered that na...

Autumn...

It would fracture her composure more than she would ever allow anyone to see... she knew he was going to drive her crazy... Kieran was never an easy guy now... Was he? Never!

Her expression hardened.

"Very well," she said quietly.

"If you insist on reaching for her..."

Her fingers shifted from his sternum to just above it, hovering over the center of his chest.

Right over his heart.

The air around her hand darkened.

It wasn’t shadows.

Not the absence of light.

But sothing denser.

Sothing older.Borrowed powers...

The temperature dropped.

The wind around them stilled unnaturally.

Even the fallen body of Thorgar behind her seed to sink deeper into silence.

Selene closed her eyes.

And reached inward.

Not to the one that reminded her of Autumn, not the one she was mocked for.

But to the part of her power she rarely touched.

The part that dealt not with life...But with what lingers after it.She never wanted to touch it... she was a clever woman, knew very well what price she would have to pay for it... but this was her desperation forcing her... she wanted to do this... by hook or by crook... Even though she knew full well this hook might cost her dearly.

A thin filant of darkness gathered at her fingertips.

It did not glow.

It swallowed.

The ground beneath her palm frost-lined faintly as that power condensed...threads of necromantic energy twisted together like black silk drawn from a wound in the world.

Kieran’s heartbeat faltered when it neared him.

His grip loosened slightly.

His wolf recoiled instinctively.

"Shh," Selene whispered.

"This will not hurt."

The darkness thinned into sothing needle-fine.

Delicate.

Precise.

She lowered her hand until her palm rested over his heart once more.

And pressed.

The thread slid into him.

Not through skin.

Through essence.

Through the place where pulse becos presence.

Kieran’s body arched sharply once...breath tearing from his lungs in a silent cry. His fingers spasd around her wrist before falling limp.

The darkness flowed inward like ink dropped into water...branching, weaving, settling.

It did not replace him.

It wrapped around him.

Around his heart.

Around the place where instinct and loyalty burned.

Selene’s breathing slowed as she felt it anchor.

A fragnt of herself.

Bound to him... tethered...

To know.

To feel.

To restrain if necessary. The epito of obsession.

"There," she whispered faintly.

The thread tightened once, then dissolved into invisibility beneath his skin.

His heartbeat stabilized imdiately.

Steadier.

More controlled.

His wolf quieted...not asleep, but leashed.

Selene opened her eyes slowly.

A faint shadow remained beneath them now.

But she regretted nothing at all.

"You will live," she said softly.

"Even if you have to hate for it."

Her thumb brushed his cheek once more.

Possessive now that she had established her claim.

"You are not slipping away again."

Kieran lay still.

Breathing even.

Suspended once more.

But this ti with subtracted free will... floating...

And not so far away...

Above the raging sea and the sentient store...Autumn faltered midair.

The storm did not strike her nor did Fenric touch her.

Yet sothing shifted.

A thread inside her chest...

The one that had always humd faintly along with her heartbeat, whether Kieran was near, or far...

It dimd.

Not severed.

A lot like when he had taken Lyla for his wife... but dimr...

Just not dim, but distant.

Her breath caught.

Her heart stuttered out of rhythm with the glowing veins beneath Calareth.

Fenric noticed imdiately.

He tilted his head, watching her expression change.

"What is it?" he asked lightly. "Did the land grow quiet for you?"

Autumn ignored him.

Her hand pressed unconsciously against her sternum.

There.

That place.

Where warmth usually lived.

It felt... muted.

Like soone had placed glass between her and sothing vital.

Or worse...

"Kieran..." she breathed.

The sea beneath her pulsed faintly...but as if not in sync anymore.

Sothing foreign had entered the rhythm.

Sothing cold.

Fenric’s smile deepened slowly as he watched her.

"Oh darling," he murmured. "Sothing wrong? Running out of batteries?!"

Autumn’s jaw tightened.

"What did you do?" she demanded.

Fenric’s laughter was softer this ti.

"I didn’t do anything!!!"

His gaze flicked towards the distant shore.

"But looks like soone did sothing. You don’t look too good." He chuckled.

The storm trembled.

And for the first ti since this battle began, Autumn felt strain...bound in darkness she could not yet see.
