(Continued)
Fenric’s laughter rang out too loud.
It rolled, almost indulgent...across the storm like a hand stroking sothing already broken. Mocking it.
But beneath them...
The sea answered.
Far below the surface, deep within Calareth’s spine, the glowing veins pulsed again.
Once.
Twice.
Slow.
asured.
In perfect, terrifying sync with Autumn’s heart.
She felt it before she understood it.
A pressure blood behind her sternum.
It was heavy. It was rhythmic. As if sothing unseen had pressed an ear to her chest and decided to listen. Her breath stuttered. The air tasted tallic. Each beat of her heart dragged a faint echo through the water beneath her feet.
Thud.
The veins flared brighter.
Thud.
The light rippled outward through the stones like a nervous system waking up.
Autumn’s levitation wavered...not downward this ti, but sideways...caught in a strange, gentle current that did not belong to the storm.
The water beneath her...cald. Or maybe it cald just for her.
Not still.
Not safe.
But quieter.
And warr.
The violent chop softened into slow, rolling swells, the blackened surface smoothing as if soothed by her presence. The hiss of Fenric’s miasma dimd where it brushed near her, steam thinning, reluctant.
Fenric felt it too.
His laughter faltered.
Just a fraction.Or maybe he tried too hard to not show it at all.
But it beca very clear. Very evident.
The sea beneath him reacted very differently.
The water churned violently, spiraling inward. Black currents folded over one another as if rejecting him. Red miasma struck the surface and did not spread this ti...it sank, dragged down in writhing tendrils, swallowed by sothing far older than Fenric’s abnormal corruption.
Fenric stopped circling.
His boots hovered inches above the roiling water, but the ease was gone. The air around him thickened, resistant. His miasma flickered, its glow stuttering like a fla starved of oxygen.
"...Interesting," he murmured.
His voice had changed.
The mockery dulled.
Curiosity sharpened.
Autumn lifted her head slowly, rain tracing the line of her jaw, her vision still blurred at the edges. Blood clung warm beneath her nose, but she wiped it away with the back of her hand, eyes never leaving him.
"You feel it," she said quietly.
Fenric’s gaze snapped to her.
" Overconfidant fools like you always did have a talent for misnaming things," he replied, but there was no smile now. "I ’recognize’ it."
He extended one hand, fingers splaying as he reached...not towards Autumn, but downward, towards the glowing veins far below the waterline.
The mont he did...the sea convulsed.
A violent surge spiraled upward beneath him, slamming into his levitation field. Fenric grunted, boots dropping a full foot before he forced himself back up, teeth bared.
"So that’s how it is," he said softly. "You respond to blood."
The veins pulsed again.
Brighter.
Slower.
Autumn gasped as the pressure in her chest intensified. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, too loud. Each thud pulled heat through her veins, not burning...as if asuring.
"She’s listening," Autumn whispered, more to herself than him.
Fenric’s eyes flicked to her sharply.
"Listening?" he echoed.
Another pulse.
This ti the glow spread farther—through the subrged cliffs, through the jagged stone where Dax and the others clung, dragging themselves forward against brutal currents.
Dax felt it like a hand on his spine.
The water eased just enough for them too.
The crushing pressure lifted, granting them a narrow corridor of movent. The glowing veins brightened as they passed, light rippling gently instead of flaring.
"She’s guiding us," one of the Blackmoon wolves gasped underwater, eyes wide.
Dax nodded grimly, jaw clenched as he looked up at Autumn. Sothing in him told him it wasn’t her doing. There was another force at play here. He turned to his n... and the Skartheim warriors as well.
" Keep your guards up. We won’t fight it right now. Let’s go ahead and reach the shore, but keep your guards up. Alright?!"
Right above them...above the surface...
Fenric laughed again, but this ti it was strained.
"A sentient mine," he said. "How delightfully inconvenient. This unlocks greater potential than anything.I must thank you Autumn for helping with this.Without your help I would have never been able to unlock its true potential.Your blood truly is special, hence proved." And he let out another ugly laughter.
He drifted closer to Autumn despite the resistance, miasma snapping and recoiling as if stung each ti it neared her. "Tell ," he said, voice low, probing, "does it answer you... or what you carry?Or is your blood acting just like a key... like a code for this locked door? "
Autumn’s breath shook.
Disturbing images flashed again...Kieran’s bloodied form, her father’s eyes before they emptied, her little Willa, her twins... and then all of a sudden she heard her mother’s voice...
"Not yet."
She clenched her fists.
"It doesn’t answer thieves," she said. "And it doesn’t answer liars...those who are unworthy."
The sea beneath Fenric surged violently, a towering wave spiraling upward, nearly knocking him sideways. He snarled, stabilizing himself with brute force, red miasma flaring bright...too bright.
"Careful," Autumn added softly. "She doesn’t like being forced."
Fenric’s eyes burned.
"Oh, sweet girl," he said, venom seeping back into his tone, "everything powerful has been forced at so point."
The veins dimd.
Then...
They pulsed again.
Harder.
Closer together.
Autumn cried out softly as her knees buckled midair, levitation sagging dangerously. The sea rushed up to kiss her boots once more, icy and grounding.
Fenric watched...rapt.
"Yes," he breathed. "That’s it. Let it take its due before tossing you sideways."
Autumn lifted her head, rain streaming down her face, eyes blazing despite the strain.
"No," she said hoarsely. "I let it decide.Isn’t that what you wanted?!"
The water beneath her stilled even further.
The storm above hesitated.
Calareth shifted...not awakening fully...
...but turning its attention.
Towards her.
Towards Fenric.
Towards blood already spilled.
The land was watching.
The sea was watching...
Fenric...for the first ti since he arrived at Calareth...was no longer certain of his actions... his eyes looked hither tither... like he was waiting... waiting for soone... waiting for assistance... waiting for back up...
