( ... Between the Rifts)
"You hit harder when you are scared," Karl said. "Makes it even more...beautiful."
Autumn’s rage fuelled but she smirked, shaking her head. " Unbelievable!"
He smiled...not a smirk this ti...and it hung in the charged air.
Perhaps a deliberate provocation or sothing else.
Autumn’s fire gushed... it didn’t just burn...it scread.
A helix of incandescent blue energy erupted from her, scouring the earth between them into glass.
"Scared, huh?" she echoed, her voice a low, venomous whistle. "The only thing I am scared of is holding back enough to let you walk away."
She didn’t wait for a retort.
Her body beca a projectile of pure wrath. She closed the distance, not with a blur, but with a series of violent, teleporting flickers...here, then there, a phantom of blue light...a mother’s rage.
Each apparition left an after image that lashed out with a fist or a whip of searing fla.
Karl moved...with him a shadow flowed around the light.
Strangely,he didn’t block...he dissolved and reford...laughing out loud...his laughter a maddening counterpoint to the roar of her power. Almost matching each other.
He caught a fist aid for his throat, his own hand smoking as he held it.
"There she is," he grunted, his face inches from hers, his eyes drinking in her fury. "This is the woman who wants to tear a hole in my heart, huh? It’s already yours baby...a goddess that I rember."
He used her montum, spinning and slamming her fire down into the cracked earth... but not exactly hurting her.
The impact cratered the ground.
But Autumn was already moving again...oit of reach, a geyser of blue fire erupting beneath him, throwing him back. She was on her feet in an instant, streaks of dirt and blood on her cheek from the impacts.
"Stop babbling, bastard!" she scread, hurling a condensed sphere of fire. "Shut up!"
With that a sphere hit his chest and detonated, swallowing him in a silent, blinding conflagration.
For a mont, there was only the blue white inferno.
It really really seed like Autumn did get him this ti... That he was gone for good...
But then, a spear of black miasma pierced through it, and Karl strode out, the front of his coat ash, the skin beneath cracked and weeping dark energy, but his smile utterly unbroken.
"Why, darling?" he asked, genuinely curious. "Dont you like foreplay? That’s the best part... I
isn’t it? The part worth fighting for. The part worth... corrupting...and then we can have more fun...all night long...twisting and turning...throwing and hurling...whatever you want, baby girl..." He winked, blowing a kiss at her direction.
The word landed like a physical blow. Autumn’s breath hitched.
"I will unmake you,son of a..." she whispered, the promise absolute.
"You can try...I am all open for whatever you want to do with , " he purred, and this ti his attack wasn’t playful. " But I wanna play too! Why should you have all the fun?"
A lash of solidified shadow, cold...sharp as razor, snapped towards Freya’s cocoon.
A sound of pure, feral terror ripped from Autumn’s throat.
" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! "
She didn’t intercept it...she beca the shield. She threw herself in its path, taking the blow across her back.
It sizzled, not burning, but freezing, leeching the light from her aura for a terrifying second. She cried out, stumbling forward.
Karl was there, catching her as she fell.
His arms wrapped around her from behind, one locking across her chest, the other hand tangling in her hair, yanking her head back to expose her throat. His lips brushed the shell of her ear.
"See?" he murmured, his voice intimate, a lover’s whisper in the midst of devastation. "You made hurt you. I don’t wanna hurt you.But you will force ...to save her. It’s a beautiful weakness. It’s why you will always be mine to break...a warrior should never have attachnts..."
Autumn thrashed, her fire sputtering against the oppressive, nullifying darkness he exuded. "Let go of !"
"I can’t," he breathed, inhaling the scent of her hair, of her sweat and power. "You are a fire that my shadow craves...I want you...have always wanted you...I need you. We are definition. Opposition. Balance.Don’t you see it too? " His grip tightened, becoming bruising. "You think this is a battle? This is a dance, Autumn. Our dance. And it only ends when one of us leads the other into the abyss." Karl sucked at her nape, making her entire body tremble.
With a surge of strength born of pure desperation, Autumn slamd her head back.
The crack of her skull against his face was sickening. He grunted, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second. It was all she needed.
She spun in his arms, her hands clamping onto his face, her thumbs aiming for his eyes. "Then let’s dance in hell!"
Blue fire erupted from her palms, not outwards, but inwards, pouring directly into him. Karl’s body arched.
" ARGHHH! " A raw, guttural scream tore from his throat as her fire ravaged him from the inside. The sll of charred flesh and ozone was overwhelming.
Karl’s hand shot out.He grabbed Autumn’s throat and threw her off, staggering back, clutching his face.
For the first ti, the smirk was gone, replaced by a rictus of pain and sothing else... a dark, ecstatic awe.
The skin around his eyes was cracked and blackened, his actual eyes glowing with a stolen, painful crimson light.
"YES!" he roared, the word a mix of agony and triumph. "That! That is what I have been waiting for! Show your hate, Autumn! It’s the most honest thing you have!Hell is where I belong...and I will take you along with ..."
He lunged again, no longer graceful, but brutal.
He tackled her to the ground. They rolled through the ash and shattered stone, a tangle of limbs, fire, and shadow. It was less a fight and more a vicious, intimate street brawl.
Knees, elbows, teeth. He pinned her, his weight imnse, his blood dripping onto her face.
"You can’t kill ," he snarled, his damaged eyes blazing into hers. "I am the void that feeds on your light. The harder you burn, the stronger I beco."
Autumn, trapped beneath him, stopped struggling. Her chest heaved. Her fire dimd. A single, clean tear traced through the gri on her cheek.
"You are so damn wrong," she whispered, her voice ragged. "You are not the void, Karl. You are just a ghost. A lonely, pathetic ghost trying to feel sothing by burning himself on other’s misery..."
The words, soft as they were, struck deeper than any blow. The mad light in his eyes flickered. His smirk tried to reform, but it was weak, a fragile thing... sothing like grief took over... if only for the flicker of a second...
Autumn’s hand ca up, not to strike, but to touch the side of his face, her fingers gently tracing the burned flesh for so reason.
"This isn’t a dance,Karl," she said, her voice trembling with exhaustion and a devastating pity. "It’s a funeral. But you are the one who’s already dead."
For a heartbeat, suspended in the ruin they had made, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing.
The fight had bled out of them, leaving sothing raw and terrible in its wake.
Karl’s expression finally broke.
The amusent, the malice, the lust...it all crumbled, leaving behind a yawning, infinite emptiness.
He opened his mouth to speak, to retaliate, but all that ca out was a hollow, broken whisper.
"Autumn..."
Her na...torn from him, not as a taunt this ti, or flirt.
It was the first sound that felt human for so reason...
Autumn froze. The flas licking around her hands flickered uncertainly.
For a fraction of a heartbeat, Karl wasn’t a monster. The shadows peeling from his body looked... tired. Frayed at the edges. His face...burned, cracked, bleeding...seed almost young...
"Autumn..." he called again, weaker this ti. "Help ..."
Her brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
He laughed, but it wasn’t mockery anymore.
It was hollow, bitter...a sound dragged out of soone who had run out of cruelty to hide behind.
Karl coughed, dark ichor spilling from his lips, seeping into the shattered ground.
Autumn turned sharply toward the cocoon, panic clawing at her chest... thinking this might be another one of those traps to distract her but her daughter was alright...
Karl shook his head, a twisted, almost peaceful smile ghosted over his mouth. "For once... I wish I was just a ghost..."
The ground shuddered beneath them.
The glassy crater around them splintered with a sound like breaking bone.
Above, the tear in the sky flared wider, its edges dripping with violet and blue fire, reaching hungrily toward the ground they were on.
Sothing was coming... but it was impossible to tell who...
Autumn’s flas flickered erratically now, stuttering against the pulse of the Rift. The air itself trembled between them, torn between light and dark, like the world couldn’t decide which of them to obey... which was right and which was wrong... .
Autumn dropped to her knees, clutching her chest.
She scread, summoning every ounce of her remaining fire...
The rift split open wider.
An explosion ripped through reality itself...flas twisting together, blue and black spiraling skyward as if heaven and hell were tearing each other apart...
