Chapter 221: Chapter 220 Subsidizing Foreigners_1 Chapter 221: Chapter 220 Subsidizing Foreigners_1 It was only then that Chunxi realized Zhao Erhu would definitely not care for her; this man only had eyes for Lin Yue. Her heart was truly filled with resentnt towards Zhao Erhu’s heartlessness. Yet, she still had her son waiting at ho for her, who was now her only son. She was counting on her son to provide for her in her old age, and her mother-in-law was counting on her grandson to carry on the family line. Therefore, Xiaoquan absolutely could not co to harm.

Since relying on Zhao Erhu was out of the question, Chunxi turned her attention back to Lin Yue, her heart burning with even more jealousy and rage. Once a person harbors greed, their thoughts beco easily twisted. Or perhaps, the hardships and suffering of these past years had already warped Chunxi’s soul, only now revealing the negative emotions and thoughts that the right catalyst had triggered.

Having seen through Chunxi’s true character, Lin Yue could not muster any sympathy for her. She was no Mother Mary with overflowing compassion, “I follow my husband’s wishes. What Erhu says reflects my thoughts. Besides, I’m not a doctor. How can I assist you? You should hurry to the village and find a doctor yourself.”

Although Lin Yue held no sympathy for Chunxi, she did think Little Xiaoquan was pitiable. After all, the child was innocent. It was because of this she offered Chunxi so advice.

“Yueyue, Little Xiaoquan also calls you ‘Auntie.’ Please, I beg you to save him. Aren’t you acquainted with Doctor Zheng in the city? Doctor Zheng is skilled in dicine and will surely be able to cure Xiaoquan. Could you please ask him to co?” Chunxi had spent enough ti with Lin Yue to be very familiar with her affairs. She brought up Doctor Zheng as if it was only natural that Lin Yue should help her and did not see anything amiss with her request—as if helping her was a given.

Lin Yue was speechless at Chunxi’s way of thinking, and could only scoff in response, “The Zhao family’s affairs… Are you confused about the situation? Who do you think you are to ? Why should I help you? Do I owe you from a past life or sothing? In the past, I took extra care of you because I saw you were a decent person, and you, as a widow with a son, had a hard life. Out of sympathy, I helped you out, but that was just kindness. I have no obligations towards you. Now you not only lack gratitude but also overstep boundaries, wanting more. You’re too ungrateful. I can’t afford a friend like you, and I look down on soone like you even more. So let’s not have anything more to do with each other henceforth.”

In the past, Lin Yue thought that even if Chunxi’s character was unreliable, it wasn’t necessary to be so absolute, as long as she hadn’t done anything too shaful. It would have sufficed to simply interact with her as an ordinary villager. But now it was clear that this person really didn’t care about losing face, so Lin Yue decided it was better to make her stance clear now and spare herself future interactions.

Upon hearing Lin Yue’s words, Chunxi found Lin Yue to be even more detestable. She felt that Lin Yue had given her only trivial things, which were nothing to brag about. For Lin Yue, those things were like a drop in the bucket, easily given, yet she acted as if she were the benevolent one, full of compassion, deliberately putting on a show in front of Brother Erhu. Brother Erhu must have been blinded by Lin Yue, this two-faced, deceitful woman, to not see her worth.

Now, she wanted to expose Lin Yue’s hypocritical face. With red-rimd eyes, she glared at Lin Yue bitterly, “Lin Family, how can you be so cruel? Little Xiaoquan is just a child, and yet you refuse to save him. How can your heart be so hard? I know you dislike appearing before Brother Erhu and beco jealous and angry. But now is not the ti for such petty matters. Xiaoquan’s illness is the most important concern. If sothing happens to Xiaoquan, will your conscience be clear?”

Lin Yue was again amused by Chunxi’s ‘logic’ and questioned, “It’s quite funny. He’s not my son, so why would I have any qualms? His own mother doesn’t care about his life or death, not taking him to see a doctor. Instead, she runs over here in the middle of the night trying to seduce a man. If he really cos to harm, he can only bla his fate for landing in the care of such an irresponsible mother.”

After finishing, she saw Chunxi wanted to interject, but Lin Yue didn’t give her the chance to speak and continued, “As for Doctor Zheng, it’s still the middle of the night. Even if you went to the city, the gates wouldn’t be open. If you truly worry about Xiaoquan’s illness, find a village doctor to stabilize his condition first. Then tomorrow morning, hire a cart to bring Doctor Zheng from the city. Doctor Zheng is a good doctor who treats all patients equally. If you ask him yourself, I think he won’t refuse. You don’t need anyone else’s help.”

“But that would an I’d have to pay his consultation fee!” Chunxi said, realizing too late that she had let slip her inner calculations.

Lin Yue didn’t know what to say to this mad woman who had caused such a commotion, robbing them of their sleep, all because she wanted to seduce Zhao Erhu—not to ntion she didn’t want to pay the consultation fee herself. How ungrateful!

Tired of talking to Chunxi, Lin Yue simply had Zhao Erhu close the door, shutting Chunxi outside. Zhao Erhu had been eager for Lin Yue to take such action, and he didn’t forget to add as he closed the door, “Don’t co to my house again. You’re not welco here. If you co again, I’ll throw you out. If you don’t mind the sha, just try.”

Lin Yue didn’t know what Chunxi did afterward, whether she found a doctor or not. She was an unrelated person and Lin Yue couldn’t be bothered to care. What mattered was the next day Dalang and Erhu were supposed to go to Xiaoxi Village, to their maternal grandparents’ place. In the past, she was upset because Zhao Erhu only inford her matter-of-factly about this trip, instead of discussing it with her, so she stubbornly decided to ignore the matter. Now that she had reconciled with Zhao Erhu and felt more genuine concern for the children, the situation was different.

From what she’d heard from Zhao Erhu and the children, the grandparents seed like reasonable people, simple and honest farrs. They had been good to the children, which is why they still cared for them even after the death of the Zhao matriarch, inviting them over every year to stay. As the children’s mother, she shouldn’t disregard these kindnesses. She needed to prepare the children’s provisions so they wouldn’t be a burden to soone else and also take so gifts for the grandparents.

Dalang’s uncle ca early in the morning to pick up the children. Actually, he was also following his mother’s orders to see how Dalang and Erhu were faring. He wanted to know what kind of stepmother they had—whether she was harsh and if she mistreated the two brothers.

After all, the previous Li Family matriarch was heartless, barely taking care of her own son, let alone soone else’s. Dalang and Erhu had suffered under her care, distressing the grandparents who felt powerless to help. The most they could do was take the boys in for a while every year. They couldn’t keep them too long for fear of other sons and daughters-in-law resenting them for using family resources to support outsiders. The elderly couple were caught in a difficult position.
