However, before he could lead his troops to Kyoto, he fell ill and died suddenly, allowing Ii Naosuke to install the young Tokugawa Iemochi as the Shogun's heir. This ignited the bloody Ansei Purge and the movent to revere the Emperor and expel the barbarians during the Bakumatsu period, and even Ii Naosuke himself was assassinated in the Sakuradamon incident by Satsuma Domain retainers, triggering the subsequent movent to overthrow the Shogunate.
If, at that ti, Shimazu Saibara's march on Kyoto had been successful, and the Tokugawa Shogunate had been able to reform itself and open the country with military support instead of signing unequal treaties under Ii Naosuke, modern Japanese history might have been completely different.
It was knowing this history that caused Chen Yu to reflect on the capriciousness of fate.
